About the Prison Service

The Prisons is the third arm of the Criminal Justice System after the Police and Courts.  The Nigerian Prisons Service is under the supervision and control of the The Ministry of the Interior and the Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Services' Board.   

 

Directorates

For effective and efficient administration and management the organizational structure of the Nigerian Prisons Service is such that it is divided into six directorates. Each directorate has a different and distinct mandate.

 
Command Structure

For effective execution of its mandate the Nigerian Prisons Service Command structure is broken down into:

  1. 1 National Headquarters, Abuja
  2. 8 Zonal Commands, and
  3. 36 State Commands

The Research and Publications Unit of the Nigerian Prisons Service is saddled with the responsibility of, among other things, publishing magazines and periodicals for the enlightenment of not just the Prisons community but all who may find information on prisons useful.

NEWS & THE PRESS
  PARAMILITARY HOUSE SCHEME FLAGS OFF
 

The housing needs of men and women of the paramilitary Services in the Ministry of Interior is set to be addressed. A scheme to handle the issue has been kicked off under the Public Private Partnership arrangment. Beneficiaries would include officers and men of the Nigerian Prisons Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp, and Nigerian Fire Service.

  MORE THAN 84 INMATE-UNDERGRADUATES IN PRISON
 

There are no less than 84 inmates in the Nigerian Prisons Service running various academic courses even in their incarceration.
