26 INMATES OF ABAKALIKI PRISON REGAIN FREEDOM Date: 2018/02/14
26 inmates of Abakaliki Prison, Ebonyi State have regained their freedom courtesy of the visit of the Chief Judge of Ebonyi State, Honourable Justice Aloy Nweke Nwankwo.
According to ASP Iyasei Nneka, the Nigerian Prisons Ebonyi Command Public Relations Officer, the inmates included 18 who were granted bail and another 8 including a juvenile who were discharged. The inmates released were awaiting trial inmates most of who have stayed longer than they would have stayed serving the maximum sentence for the charge against them had they been found guilty. The Chief Judge therefore had to let them off the hook for lack of diligent prosecution. Other criteria used by the Judge for their release include age, health ground and simplicity of charge.
While thanking the Chief Judge for the visit, the Controller of Prisons, Emilia pleaded for a more regular exercise as it will help in decongesting the prisons in the State.
